Copyright your cocktail

Got your own cocktail mix that u’d like recognized? Now, Bartender Magazine registers & issues certificates to show that u’re the original creator of a particular cocktail.

Called CocktailRight, only one cert will be issued per recipe.

Pretty cool. Pretty egoistic too.

I guess it’s about bragging rights. I’m not gonna apply for them. For one, it costs US$35. And, it dont bother me whoever created the recipe coz i believe in sharing and exchanging knowledge.

But seriously, u could legally protect a cocktail recipe by i) Registering the cocktail recipe itself as a copyright (possibly under Literally Works Registration); ii) Trademarking the name of the cocktail, so nobody else can use that name.

The cert by Bartender Mag is more for fun. But it could make a nice gift for one of your easily-pleased alco friends. Frame and stick it on d wall n shit.

Beer cocktails for beerheads

I dunno what am gettin into here. Beer cocktails?? Well, they exist, so no point ignoring them.

Beer is a watered-down drink as it is, so ideally its best not to add too much of anything non-alcoholic into it, tho small amounts are fine. I tend to take my beer with a couple of shots of lime cordial for two reasons – it tastes good; and i end up drinking a lot faster and a lot more. Coz d problem with beer is the filling feel it gives.

Goddam beer is pretty versatile. Here are some of the more well-known cocktails.

Beer - more than a breakfast drink

1. Lager Lime – Like i said, beer with about 1.5 shots of lime cordial. (To know more about drink measurements, refer my post here.)

2. Snakebite – Half a pint of lager with half a pint of cider. Usually, a dash of blackcurrant cordial, “black”, is added as a sweetener. This is sometimes known as ‘diesel’. Some variants “float” the beer atop the cider in separate layers. Goes down too easy. A true Snakebite will also have a shot of vodka.

3. Black and Tan – Half and half – pale ale at the bottom, stout on the top. The most well-known brands of pale ale are Bass, Cooper’s and Sierra Nevada. Cant seem to find ’em here. Was a favourite when i was part-timing as a bartender in UK.

4. Black Velvet – Half stout, half champagne. Haha! Sounds like a winner. Cant wait to try dis one!

5. Red Eye – Add a shot (30ml) of tomato juice to any ale or lager (this cocktail is also known as Tomato Beer or a Red Rooster). Hmm. Dunno bout this, bout sounds ok.

6. Cili Haram – Add a few drops of Tabasco into your beer. Created this when i was bored at a bar. Also coz i miss this Mexican chili beer i used to have, dont remember in which country. At d bottom of d bottle there’ll be a cute lil mafucker, looks like a cili padi. Adds spice to every sip. Can recreate d effect with Tabasco.

7. Bee Sting – Dark beer plus some orange juice. I’d think lager / wheat beer would be a bettter choice.

8. I dunno what its called or who made it, maybe me – Lager with a few drops of Ribena.

9. Caribbean Night – Beer and a shot of coffee liqueur. Interesting.

10. Name unknown (lets call it Todi Negro) – toddy + stout. A favourite locally-created cocktail.

11. Top 10 – a Sabah specialty – half lager, half Royal Stout / Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. D wilder chicks over there seem to luv it!

12. Donkey Piss – Beer + tequila = Bad idea.

OK, now go fuck around with beer.

Spotted…

A coupla pretty cool new mixers are in town. It’s for lazy butts, and also good to bring along to a house party. Or if u wanna have some fun on a lazy, chillin Saturday afternoon at home / poolside.

One is by Tabasco, those fuckers who burn mouths very well. It’s a pre-mix called Bloody Mary Mix. The one available here is labelled “Mildly Seasoned”. The other choice is “Extra Spicy”, which i havent seen yet. Price is $23.90 (946ml), spotted at Hock Lee’s in Damansara Heights, Jln Batai. It contains lime juice, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce, extra thick concentrated tomato juice, Tabasco, horseradish and lemon juice.

Come n get it!

Tabasco hot pepper sauce has been a key ingredient in Bloody Marys since the cocktail’s creation in the early 1920′s.

Did u know that, like alcohol, Tabasco is aged for up to three years in oak barrels? Well now u know.

(Btw Tabasco now has a habanero mix. Habanero is that lil’ bastardo dat fried my face at Frontera. And cooked Henry’s brains to ‘well-done’.)

The other is by tequila boys Jose Cuervo, called Margarita Mix (Classic Lime). The one-liter bottle costs $26.90. The other one by Cuervo (not spotted yet) is Strawberry Lime.

I luv margaritas, especially frozen, strong ones. Makes me feel all tropical n shit, ideally sipped poolside or beachside. Coz tequilas can be enjoyed slow rather than slammed.

Sheeet, now i feel i shd bought d goddam mixer. Thirsty.

These are pretty much moron-proof mixers, so get your blenders out this weekend and get busy!

The Beer Factory

The Beer Factory (6141-6450) is a bar which opened recently at Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara. No, its not an actual factory, but uses that as a theme.

It’s got two floors (the upper one is called The Attic) and an outdoor area, which will be renovated into a garden theme soon.

Factory visit

One of the guys there, Kent, invited me over to check it out. And hit some of their house cocktails, with the help of head barman Daniel.

After a pint of Franziskaner, Daniel came to our table to set-up. There were mixers, flammable thermogel, a stove, a pan and Jack Daniel’s.

Mini-kitchen

Then he got busy. He started to cook something right there. It looked like frying.

Oi! Main masak-masak ah??

Barman Daniel cookin up

It’s a cooked cocktail called Take Me Home –  whisky, rum, Triple Sec, chocolate cubes, strawberry puree, cranberry juice & sweet ‘n sour. I fuckin loved it, coz it went down real easy, with a candy-like flavour. The chocolate bits was d clincher. It will hit u for $63.25 net (two servings).

Result

He proceeded to make us Strawberry Long Island Iced Tea ($40.25), with strawberry puree and crushed strawberries. Pretty strong. Some adjustment in strawberry flavour might be required if u prefer it sweeter. Its also available in a giant tumbler for $172.50.

Bastardized long island

The bar also serves Erdinger draft

There are five signature cocktails.

Beers on tap are Carlsberg, Hoegaarden, Connor’s, Erdinger, Fraziskaner and Stella, with prices ranging from $17.25 to $34.50, while happy hours are until 12am daily for now, and will revert to 10pm sometime in d future. Operation hours are 5pm to 2am daily.

There’re also about 30 bottled beers. At the mo, there’re bar snacks, but there’ll be more when the outlet’s launched & the kitchen’s fully in op.

Bottles are available – JW Black ($333.50 net), Absolut ($264.50), J Daniel’s ($310.50), Bacardi ($264.50, Jose Cuervo ($264.50).

The upper floor lounge, Attic

There’re promo prices for drinks during the World Cup.

Soon (probably mid-July), there will be a competition, Chapter 1, involving Erdinger. It’s 3-liters, 3 persons, 3 minutes, 3 Cemeteries, 300 bucks. Three of u will be given 3 minutes to down a HUGE fucking glass of Erdinger, followed by a cocktail each. Buy-in is $300 (pretty steep).  The winning team gets a 30-liter keg of Carlsberg.

The overall grand prize winner over the several months will win a year’s supply of booze. More details u better call ’em.

Hmmm. If beer weren’t so gassy, might give it a shot. The gas build-up is fuckin puky. It aint so bad with a weissbier tho. And a year’s supply of booze might kill me. Nice way to die eh.

But still my rep will drop if i end up spraying beer on spectator’s faces/shoes. Uncool.

Big daddy awaits - the 3-liter glass (next to a pint glass)
