GAB’s Oktoberfest

A full-on party went down at Tujo (formerly known as 789) at Ascott last week, when GAB launched their Oktoberfest, season 2013. Complete with a prince.

We tried to get the prince drunk, but he wasn’t a great drinker.

We all kinda know what Oktoberfest is. It’s drinking season.

Coz Prince Ludwig got married centuries ago. He showed up at Tujo though, looking all undead. With Princess Therese. Who’s hotter than him.

The party was lotsa fun, with mug-holding challenges too. The one-litre ceramic mugs for this season look good, and weigh a kilo. So if you hold three filled with beer, that’s six kilos per hand. Tough.

Food was good, and so was the band. Tried to get them drunk too.

Lotsa Paulaner Okotberfest Bier to go round.

There’s gonna be a series of 14 historically-themed parties nationwide. Score your own mug till Nov 3 – the first refill is free! Definitely the best mug they’ve produced so far.

I was gonna end with Prost!, but i think there’s been enough prosting here.

Absolut Hibiskus

Yea, it’s here. Absolut Hibiskus is now available in KL and the rest of Malaysia, as well as duty-free, as of Sept 1.

The kick-ass launch party was last Friday, and it was good. Lots of Hibiskus too, served via two varieties of cocktails. It went down at The Poppy Lounge, which has been extensively renovated and lookin nice.

There were artworks on display, a collaboration between Pernod Ricard Malaysia and online art hub 3editions.

Party Poppying

Party Poppying

The cocktails on tap were Absolut Pom-Rose and Absolut Calamansi, created by 23aubergine. The Pom-Rose was real good, with the addition of roselle juice and some pomegrenate syrup, plus lemonade; i added a squeeze of lime for a lil zest.

The Calamansi starts sour due to the lime, then ends bitter. Interesting, but not in large amounts for me.

I had Absolut Hibiskus straight. Quite palatable. If i had vodka on da rocks, i would probably opt for the Hibiskus. All day. It’s got a light floral nose, almost rose-like, while in the mouth, there are berry flavours, plus a natural sweetness.

The Hibiskus is actually an infusion of hibiscus and pomegranate. Absolut only makes flavored vodkas from natural ingredients, and no sugar is added. There’s a bunch of Hibiskus cocktail recipes here.

The drink is available at F&B outlets as well as off-trade at Cold Storage, Jason’s, Mercato and Econsave.

There’ll be other Absolut Hibiskus events over the next few weeks, with the next one this Friday @ Luna Bar. Nice. Like Absolut’s FB page to stay wired.

ALSO, on Sept 27 Pernod Ricard Asia will be unveiling the world’s first Absolut Brand Store at KLIA! How convenient. I’ll be in the vicinity for Arthur’s Day.

A wine journey

Wine Journey is a regular wine education session by Wine Daddy. No, it’s not a pimp, but a tutor who takes a small class over a couple of hours.

The Wine Daddy is Prakash, who has the sessions at Sanctuary@7, his awesome residence in Damansara Heights, KL. I had the opportunity to checkout his wine cellar. Very nice. I plan to go back there when he’s out.

Wine briefing

Wine briefing

The sessions, which are kinda weekly, are basically wine education and appreciation, and they organize introductory and more advanced tasting sessions to educate the wine palates of both the budding as well as the more experienced wine enthusiast.

Johnnie Walker Circuit Party Cocktails & deluxe tasting

I recently was fortunate enough to attend a tasting session hosted by Johnnie Walker‘s Global Brand Ambassador, Tom Jones, who’s been in the scene for 20 years.

We began the evening at Twenty One in Bangsar (BSC) with the Gold Label.

I find the Gold to be silky, soft, with a sweet start, and subtle smokiness and spice in the finish. A unique blend. Don’t get to drink it very often though.

Yum yum!

Yum yum!

The good ol’ number one Scotch in the world followed, the Black Label. The Black has a crispier, maltier nose, and on the palate, it’s spicier and rich, with a lil bite in the finish. Definitely more edgy. A classic blend for sure.

We followed with my favourite, the Double Black. This baby is smoky n sweet on the nose. It’s smokier and rolls smoother in the mouth than the rest; not as sweetish as the Gold, not as spicy as the Black, but definitely smokier…. the reason i love it. A pleasant, balanced finish.

The party moved to the bar, where we had a preview of the whisky cocktails that’ll be served at the Johnnie Walker Circuit Lounge party 2013. Not just that, we mixed them ourselves! Nice.

The great news is, in this event, guests don’t just to get the premium Black Label to savour, but the Gold and Double Black too! Thus, it’s not called the Black Circuit Lounge anymore; just Johnnie Walker Circuit Lounge.

Three cocktails were done –

Circuit Lounge (Black Label base). A take on the classic Whisky Sour.

Peat Perfect (Double Black base). Citrus notes to complement the smoke.

Fresh Gold (Gold Label base). A celebratory cocktail served in a flute.

I enjoyed the Peat Perfect, as it was balanced and refreshing. (30ml Double Black, 16ml fresh pink grapefruit juice, 19ml honey water, a drop of Angostura Bitters. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Enjoy.)

The party takes place on March 23 at the Skypark at Terminal 2, Subang.

Should be a rocker!
