Beer diva??

Thats right. A lady who calls herself the Beer Diva made an appearance one morning at The Tavern on GAB’s premises.

To be frank, i laughed when i got the mail invitation, like how people laugh when i say i wanna be a celebrity alco.

Not for the glamour u see, more for the perks.

One day, like the diva, maybe I could be givin talks n presentations n shit. And they could pay me in alcohol.

Hmm..

Kirrily Waldhorn is a consultant, especially for beer-food pairing in Australia. She gave a short presentation about beer basics, followed by a funny video, then some food + beer.

Since this was a morning event, had to start it right

Happy diva

We didnt go into much detail with the food pairing. Lagers, being light-tasting n bland (and sometimes boring… in my opinion anyway), tend to go well with seafood.

Lager + fish fingers

An interesting team that worked is Guinness with dessert, ie choco cake.

Decent mix

It ended with that, and then we continued drinking.

I think dry, robust malts would go with sweet shit. A simple way to figure is the general rule, if thinking like wine – regard lagers like white wine, and ales as red wine. Thus, red meat would go better with ales, tho we’re unfortunately low on choices when it comes to ales (like porters, IPAs, bocks). Lagers are crisp n delicate, ales are robust and sometimes fruity.

Some say the beer-food should complement each other, while others say contrast. That’s a tough one. I’d usually go for complement, coz i cant imagine cake with lager! *Vomit* Or stout with prawns.

‘Beer experts’ advocate stronger and fruitier flavors (like wheat beers) when dining on spicy fare.

Then again, u can be experimental. In fact, u could also pair food with your DIY beer cocktails. Like Cili Haram, a spicy drink dat goes well with sumtin salty n fried. Or even creamy, for contrast, like Sid’s kick-ass blue cheese shrooms.

Speaking of GAB, it had a Christmas party recently for the Guinness brand, which went down in Malone’s, KL Sentral. There was turkey too!

Merry Guinness was launched, a nationwide campaign for December, with special events (54 of them) and collectibles: an ol skool Guinness glass.

Spot the turkey(s)

U can get it free with every six pints of draft or a bucket of FES (Foreign Extra Stout, bottles). There’re two designs, based on the acclaimed Guinness ads of 1938 & 1955, which featured illustrations by John Gilroy.

U know the hornbill on Guinness merchandise? Its actually a toucan, native to the Americas. I got him on my pillowcase.

Up for grabs

December’s gonna be heavy, as usual!

How's this for a vintage ad?? Luv d wheels!

A lil’ taste

Hit a wine tasting last week. Its been awhile. The last time, i was a panelist!

This one was organized by Adventure & Leisure (A&L), a company that deals in all sorts of cool outdoor gear, like the Igloo coolers featured here, as well as wines and ports.

Adventure & booze: My two favourite things.

Wine 'em, dine 'em, sixty-nine 'em

Went down in Italiannies @ The Gardens, KL. My camera was missing for a week (don’t ask), so pix here are from a borrowed a camera dat dont really shoot at night. (Actually, not much diff with my camera then!) To top it off, i was late. A disorganized day.

Dealer

Seven wines, seven courses. All Italian. $90 net.

My fave was a rosé – Zenato Bardolino DOC, served right at the start (with bruschetta man, one of my goddam numero uno appetizers!). Good drink to kick-off – Easy to drink, not very dry, enough body, and a light finish. Had to have more than one.

Nice spot

Of the food, notable ones were the first course – Prawns & zucchini balls with capers, basil & sun-dried tomato cream. Also the Lamb cutlets, served with butternut squash, roasted cherry tomato & beans, in a rosemary, thyme and mint sauce. Quite a hit. This one came with a red obviously, the Notte di Gallileo Reserva.

Course number 5 - Baked chicken chillin on Milanese risotto, which is drier than normal

Various other Italian wines were featured – 2 whites, 3 reds, and a sparkling red, Merzemino. This was served at the end, as opposed to the regular procedure of opening the evening with a bubbly. Thats coz this one’s sweet, so it became a dessert wine, which came with a Tiramisu, Panna Cotta (i swear this sounds like a vulgar Tamil word or sumtin) and a Rum Baba, which is some pudding made with rum. Surprisingly, not my thing.

Prices range between $65 – $93, although on the nite, they were priced $55 – $75. Very reasonable.

A&L director LC Leong does sessions like this quite regularly. Look forward to the next one, and this time i’ll be more prepared! And will detail more.

The right way to end the night

Banting toddy

Hit Banting for toddy yesterday with a hangover n some of my buddies who also went to St John’s. Been to the one along Kapar Road, the shack in Brickfields, and the seafood joints at Teluk Gong and Northport, but this the nicest one so far.

Its at the back of an ol wooden bungalow, and the family has been supplying most of the toddy shacks in Banting for three generations.

Obviously there’s more to Banting than a crazy Datuk who likes to murder business associates and burn the body / bodies in his farm.

D joint. Unmarked

Mix n match

The toddy is pretty good, and served chill. Since its kinda light, we added more intoxicants into d drink, mainly Guinness FES.

And the food is good. We dug into wild boar, turkey, monitor lizard, mutton and chicken. O yea, quail too.

The spot is located in a shaded area, with chickens and turkeys loitering.

Biawak – bony

Bantaaai!

Niga reacting to his first taste of lizard

Deep-fried mini-birds

In session

Cosy enough, compared to some of the shitholes i been to

Hours

The bar

Locating it is real easy if ur comin from the Kesas Highway. Its at Telok Datok on Route 5, just before Banting town. Gotta turn into a lil driveway that’s easy to miss (on your right if Klang is behind you. Gotta u-turn further up under a bridge and come back around). It looks deceivingly like any other family home. Located here (refer to the hybrid map).

Great way to spend a Sunday.

Note: I got this joint featured on the National Geographic Channel in 2014.

Quite a Funky Villa

The Funky Villa (7725-2308) is this restaurant & bar dats been around for a few months in e@Curve, Damansara Perdana, PJ.

The food is actually authentic Thai. With good selection of grills.

More on that later. Our first drink was a giant margarita. Like fuckin huge. U could lose your face in it.

As compared to a large pack of fags

This is the Funky Rita, with four layers of flavour & colours ($67.85 net). It will take u ages to go thru this frozen stuff! Maybe an hour. So its best to keep this as a side drink while u have your main drink. Its def d largest glass of cocktail i’ve ever attacked.

My fave part is d top, which is a strawberry mix. There are like nine frozen cocktails dat come in these gorilla glasses, like Mama Alexander (rum, Tia Maria, coconut cream)  and Peach Alexander (Cognac, Creme de Cacao, peach liquer).

Tripped out, as the outlet is inspired by Koh Phangan's full moon parties

Melon Colada shd make a decent dessert – rum, Midori, coconut cream, honeydew & vanilla ice-cream.

Totolly trrropikal marn.

Illusion - fruity

We also had some Illusion ($29.90) (Vodka, Malibu, Blue Curacau, Midori, OJ). Strong shit. But like any such cocktail, goes down quick.

I gotta say for a Thai joint, d place has quite a few drinks in its list.

D little food dat we had was great. One amazing dish from northern Thailand is the goddam Ra Hum On Jun. No shit.

Take me to your dealer

Like nothing i’ve had in my life. Basically boiled egg wrapped in fishcake ($15). Am not really a big fan of either one, but man. The eggs are boiled to i dunno 85% or sumtin, so its not totally hard yet, jelly-like, and combines with the spicy fishcake topped with sum salad to blow your mind outta yor skull.

For sharers

After recovery we dug into some platter. Tong Lo ($55.20). This one is kinda a good grill sampler of seafood, tenderloin, prawn cake, spring rolls and a mango salad. For a couple of alcos like me & Byron, we had a tough time finishing it coz our stomachs were full of margarita! But i gotta say, the outlet’s grilled food is excellent. A great accompaniment for drinks. There’re also loads of That tapas.

The menu is very extensive. Makin a choice could be a problem! There are six Thai chefs there.

So our food escapade ended right there, and we moved on to the Nutcracker, a cocktail of vodka, Irish Cream, Amaretto, hazelnut liqeuer and a lil vanilla ice-cream.

Yummy

The outlet is labelled as a Thai Grill & Wine Room. It does have outdoor BBQ, as well as some wines. There’re actually several sections to it – the dining area inside, the bar  area, the cushy lounge, the patio, and the newly-launched Balcony & Funky Villa.

Loungin

Barcony is a mezzanine floor, more like a balcony. A great spot for private parties or BBQs. I watched this fish (below) being BBQ-ed – lemongrass-stuffed, (thru d damn mouth) salt-baked sea bass, a northern delicacy. I tried a lil. Niice.

Pla Krapong Tod Sam Rod. Seriously.

The semi-outdoor Balcony

They got sum sweet lunch deals:

OK wat

Happy hours – noon till 6pm – $51.75 for two pints Hoegaarden, Stella or Connor’s. ($63.25 from 6pm-10pm). Carlsberg pitcher at $41.40 from noon till 10pm. Funky Villa opens till late.

Beware the crazy bird..

Yesss... beware
