Partying and staying safe – Situational Awareness

Have been wanting to write about personal safety for awhile now, especially since many of us are out at night. And when you’re high, you’re extremely open as your situational awareness is close to zero.

Anyway, an incident involving a friend’s girl prompted me to do this.

I have written about it on my FB page as a note, but will reproduce it here:

Staying safe is up to you – Situational Awareness

Incidences of crime happen everywhere, at anytime. Unfortunately, women are more vulnerable.

Instead of relying on security guards, cops, or others, and crap like CCTV (which doesn’t usually help till after), the best bet is to rely on you.

I’m surprised that many women would voluntarily step out of the vehicle when they’re in accident. It’s best to stay in, especially if it’s not a busy area, or after dark. All you need to do is wind down your window enough to communicate, and arrange to meet at a police station or a friend’s place or sumtin.

Take down each other’s license plate numbers or take a picture/video, and move on. If you’re suspicious / nervous, then dont exchange your driver’s license details, coz your home address is on it.

When i was a writer with The Star, we had a weekly column called Survival Smarts, which i usually wrote, until i quit. It covered various things – escaping a fire, first aid, getting out of a jungle / self-rescue, personal safety, etc.

With personal safety, I met an expert many years ago, Julian Lim. He da man. We devised a series of articles on safety, specifically women’s personal safety. They’re good stuff.

I realize most people don’t have Situational Awareness, or know what it means. It’s basically knowing what’s goin on around u, and was originally an Air Force term. It involves gathering information (visual, etc), analyzing it, and making projections (reacting, etc) based on that analysis.

Blur or wat (pix by Star)

An example would be knowing if you, or your vehicle, are being followed, knowing exactly where your car is parked and the possible threats there, ensuring there is no one in your garage before you exit the vehicle, etc.

Would u know where’s the nearest Police station in these areas? – D’sara Heights, Kiara, Bangsar, Puchong, SS2, Ampang, etc? Do you care? In times of emergency, would you be able to instinctively get there fast? Or do u have to turn on your GPS first?

There’s an app called My Distress, specifically for emergencies in Selangor, as it’s by the state police. Get it –

My Distress app - technology could save your ass someday

From what i understand, this is for smartphones, and for the app to inform the cops of your exact location, your GPS needs to be on. So instead of trying to turn it on in emergency (that wd be quite silly), it’s best to turn on your GPS and put your app on-screen, on standby, when you’re driving alone at night or something.

When shit happens, u can immediately hit d panic button. Hide d device somewhere on your body in case you’re taken. Cops are usually on you in minutes.

Most girls don’t even have pepper spray! U shd keep one in your car (within quick reach with your seatbelt on) and one in your handbag side pocket. (U shd also keep one in your room, but dats home safety, which is another story.) When ur walking alone, eg in a carpark, one hand should hold the keys ready, and the other should hold the spray. It’s not like a big stick or anything; not like everyone will stare if you’re carrying that little kicka in your palm.

A pump into a threatening guy’s face will fuck him up, real good. (Once fired, get away quick.) The most effective short to medium-range weapon around.

Anyway you can read the stuff we (mainly Julian) worked on.

Start with Part 1, linked here, which i feel is the most important one  – Surveillance and Evasion.

The best advise from all this is – when you’re unsure, just fucking run. It’s ok to look uncool. The perpetrator wouldn’t expect you to run. He would expect you to wonder what is it that he wants, etc. That’s how the operate – on your uncertainty, your ‘trust’, and your lack of time to react.

Just run fast in the other direction. Forget about your fancy handbag, or that your damn car door is still open, or your shopping is on the floor. Screw dat shit. Your life’s infinitely more valuable that dat.

So remember this three-letter word when you’re nervous or your instincts are unsure. R-U-N. It’s simple but effective.

If really nothing’s goin on, u can  just cooly walk back right? Sall good.

“Obviously, if we miss spotting the danger until it confronts us, we have lost the main tool to avoid it.” – Julian.

Anyway, when you’re done reading Part 1, Part 2 is regarding getting away – Reaction & Escape.

Simple thing like throwing your handbag or keys into the person’s face before scooting off can work. A split second of distraction would enable you to kick your heels off and run.

Fighting back is a last resort. But if you do, you could poke the guy’s eyes. Have no mercy. Other vulnerable points – throat, nose and balls (the best).

Part 3 is on fighting back – Self-Protection.

Nah, ambik (pix by Star)

We shot evasion/defence videos too, but the links seem down. Will check with my ex-editor and update here.

Anyway, I think Part 1 & 2 are the most handy.

If u wanna know how to escape a fire (could be useful), it’s here.

There’s a series of crime safety articles by The Star on this page, including on theft and robbery. Check it out.

That’s it for now.  Share this info your friends pls, especially girls.

Remember that awareness and avoidance is still the best way. As we learnt in the Eagle Scouts, something i apply till today, our simple motto goes a long way – ‘BE PREPARED’

Dining in Comida

Checked out Comida (6211-2662) recently, a joint with good Mediterranean & Western food in Publika.

The joint

It’s got an interesting menu, with a range of pastas, pizzas & burgers, among others, and it’s the home of what i call the BFP, Big F ‘in Pizza, a 24-inch monsta.

Good f 'in luck

Had some tapas to kick off. A kick-ass. The  Prawn Aubergine Tapas ($17.60, all prices NETT) rocks due to its gravy. Additional bread was ordered for some dunking.

Biggie hits d road

The Comida Burger ($23.10) is a beef patty (200gm), a good blend of meat, sauteed shrooms, beef bacon, bbq sauce, and some green stuff; and the patty is flamed just right to be still juicy.

Not a giant, but decent size

The highlight of d meal was the Creamy Pesto Prawn ($29.70) , a spaghetti-based dish, with prawns sauteed in olive oil & homemade pesto cream. Few pasta dishes can come close to this one. It’s all in d cream. So good that again bread was ordered to scoop d remnants of d pesto cream.

This dam ting has got me craving for it at random times.

Wont last long. Do not share

You could also try this (off-menu) – the Prawn Masala – a spicier, reddish version of d above. Enticing.

Another notable pasta is the super n simple Duck Confit Spaghetti ($28.60), which features duck slices in a pasta drenched with olive oil n peppered with sun-dried tomatoes. I assume the outlet’s strength is mainly in its pastas.

They’re also risottos & paellas. For a snack, the spicy anchovies, or the spicy chicken wings are a good bet.

Casual dining for sure

If ur a big-time eater, u cd go for d BFP challenge – if u can slaughter the 24-inch pizza in 20mins, its on da house. U also get a $50 voucher, and a Comida VIP Card. So far, 26 winners.

D outdoor sec is cool too

I hear the Comida De Postre puff is a mean hot-seller, with peanut butter on d inside, choco hazelnut sauce on d outside, topped with vanilla ice-cream. My preferred dessert however was more basic – Red Sangria ($19.80) as u’ll get loads of fruits in your face.

The Long Island Tea rocks, with none of dat cheap-shit liquors in it, but d good stuff. At $23.10, sweet deal.

Long Island being gang-raped

Chomp chomp

It’s a GAB outlet, so u get d three for $$ deal, in this case, it’s $55 nett  for three pints of Guinness/Tiger all night. Also the happy hours daily – 5-6pm, it’s $5.50 nett for a mug of Tiger or half Guinness Draft, then $6.60 (6-7pm), and $7.70 (7-8pm). Nice.

An event called 12 Strings happens every Sat nite from 9pm, featuring different musicians weekly. Worth hangin out. Been finding my ass there almost every week now.

Wall art

Comida’s reputation for good food means it has catered for, among others, Sum 41, Simple Plan, Deftones, Avril, as well as all artistes at the Future Music festival like Grandmaster Flash, FloRida, Chemical Bros, etc.

They’re also with FoodPanda, if u rather have d food delivered.

Mexican, or Mexican't?

Farewell, Palace

Heard some significant news last week from Antares. The Bamboo Palace, my escape / hideaway in KKB, is no more.

Its been real

It went out in a blaze of glory. A fire ended its glorious seven-year run.

In my fave hammock

I lurve every bit of it. The two semi-open-air rooms, the happening living room where it all went down, the funky kitchen downstairs, the straw-hat lampshades, and the nature-themed bathroom; with a proper flush toilet.

And of course the two hammocks with a view of the mountains…

..and sometimes, a rainbow

Some pix of the Palace at the mid of this previous post, where i practically had the Palace all to myself for five days. It was an unreal experience.

There’s also this video of a coffee-jam session in the Palace kitchen.

Antares has been cool about it. Renewal n stuff. He wrote bout it here. WITH pictures of it in flames.

I gotta say, i’m kinda devastated. Am afraid to go back there, coz i wanna remember it as it used to be. All that’s physically left is d kitchen sink.

Well. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s that nothing stays the same.

So squeeze d best out of every experience, and every moment.

Goodbye Palace. At least you checked-out in style.

Brewfest 2012 comin up

A major beer festival will take place from Thursday to Saturday at Publika, Solaris Dutamas.

Visitors will be able to purchase over 50 types of  premium and craft brews, most not readily available in the local market; bottled, canned or draught, from Germany, Belgium, England, Scotland, Australia, Japan and the United States.

Some of d specials

There’ll also be drinking contests and beer games, which are sure to stir things up. Get ready to challenge yourself with a Guess The Beer contest and knock yourself out with n electronic bull ride. There’ll also be a Beer Pong Challenge, & limited edition Brewfest 2012 t-Shirts produced by Salty Customs.

Yellow fever

Some of the beers i managed to sample at the preview dinner at Brussels Beer Cafe include Hitachino, from what is a 100-year old sake brewery in Japan. It’s got a nose of light perfume. The ale is creamy in the mouth, with lil tickly bubbles. The finish is a very light bitterness that comes late.

Jepun mari

There’s also the Yona Yona, a Kilkenny-coloured American Pale Ale (Japan), with a in-your-face hoppines, while the Triple Karmeliet (Belgium) smells sweet, with malty flavours, and is creamy as well. I found the Chimay Peres Trappist similar – light, sweet and a lil malty.

Then there’s the Kwak, an 8.4% Belgian ass-kicker. If u like sumtin fruity, the Timmermans Strawberry is compulsory. Great flavours with a fizz.

Nice

There’ll be these beers n more at Brewfest. There’s a door charge tho – $68, which i think is high. U’ll get between one to two beers.

Action starts from 5.30pm daily Thu – Saturday (May 17-19), until 1am. Details checkout the FB page.
