Banting toddy

Hit Banting for toddy yesterday with a hangover n some of my buddies who also went to St John’s. Been to the one along Kapar Road, the shack in Brickfields, and the seafood joints at Teluk Gong and Northport, but this the nicest one so far.

Its at the back of an ol wooden bungalow, and the family has been supplying most of the toddy shacks in Banting for three generations.

Obviously there’s more to Banting than a crazy Datuk who likes to murder business associates and burn the body / bodies in his farm.

D joint. Unmarked

Mix n match

The toddy is pretty good, and served chill. Since its kinda light, we added more intoxicants into d drink, mainly Guinness FES.

And the food is good. We dug into wild boar, turkey, monitor lizard, mutton and chicken. O yea, quail too.

The spot is located in a shaded area, with chickens and turkeys loitering.

Hours

The bar

Locating it is real easy if ur comin from the Kesas Highway. Its at Telok Datok on Route 5, just before Banting town. Gotta turn into a lil driveway that’s easy to miss (on your right if Klang is behind you. Gotta u-turn further up under a bridge and come back around). It looks deceivingly like any other family home. Located here (refer to the hybrid map).

Great way to spend a Sunday.

Note: I got this joint featured on the National Geographic Channel in 2014.

Quite a Funky Villa

The Funky Villa (7725-2308) is this restaurant & bar dats been around for a few months in e@Curve, Damansara Perdana, PJ.

The food is actually authentic Thai. With good selection of grills.

More on that later. Our first drink was a giant margarita. Like fuckin huge. U could lose your face in it.

As compared to a large pack of fags

This is the Funky Rita, with four layers of flavour & colours ($67.85 net). It will take u ages to go thru this frozen stuff! Maybe an hour. So its best to keep this as a side drink while u have your main drink. Its def d largest glass of cocktail i’ve ever attacked.

My fave part is d top, which is a strawberry mix. There are like nine frozen cocktails dat come in these gorilla glasses, like Mama Alexander (rum, Tia Maria, coconut cream)  and Peach Alexander (Cognac, Creme de Cacao, peach liquer).

Tripped out, as the outlet is inspired by Koh Phangan's full moon parties

Melon Colada shd make a decent dessert – rum, Midori, coconut cream, honeydew & vanilla ice-cream.

Totolly trrropikal marn.

Illusion - fruity

We also had some Illusion ($29.90) (Vodka, Malibu, Blue Curacau, Midori, OJ). Strong shit. But like any such cocktail, goes down quick.

I gotta say for a Thai joint, d place has quite a few drinks in its list.

D little food dat we had was great. One amazing dish from northern Thailand is the goddam Ra Hum On Jun. No shit.

Take me to your dealer

Like nothing i’ve had in my life. Basically boiled egg wrapped in fishcake ($15). Am not really a big fan of either one, but man. The eggs are boiled to i dunno 85% or sumtin, so its not totally hard yet, jelly-like, and combines with the spicy fishcake topped with sum salad to blow your mind outta yor skull.

For sharers

After recovery we dug into some platter. Tong Lo ($55.20). This one is kinda a good grill sampler of seafood, tenderloin, prawn cake, spring rolls and a mango salad. For a couple of alcos like me & Byron, we had a tough time finishing it coz our stomachs were full of margarita! But i gotta say, the outlet’s grilled food is excellent. A great accompaniment for drinks. There’re also loads of That tapas.

The menu is very extensive. Makin a choice could be a problem! There are six Thai chefs there.

So our food escapade ended right there, and we moved on to the Nutcracker, a cocktail of vodka, Irish Cream, Amaretto, hazelnut liqeuer and a lil vanilla ice-cream.

Yummy

The outlet is labelled as a Thai Grill & Wine Room. It does have outdoor BBQ, as well as some wines. There’re actually several sections to it – the dining area inside, the bar  area, the cushy lounge, the patio, and the newly-launched Balcony & Funky Villa.

Loungin

Barcony is a mezzanine floor, more like a balcony. A great spot for private parties or BBQs. I watched this fish (below) being BBQ-ed – lemongrass-stuffed, (thru d damn mouth) salt-baked sea bass, a northern delicacy. I tried a lil. Niice.

Pla Krapong Tod Sam Rod. Seriously.

The semi-outdoor Balcony

They got sum sweet lunch deals:

OK wat

Happy hours – noon till 6pm – $51.75 for two pints Hoegaarden, Stella or Connor’s. ($63.25 from 6pm-10pm). Carlsberg pitcher at $41.40 from noon till 10pm. Funky Villa opens till late.

Beware the crazy bird..

Yesss... beware

Lunch, with a lil twist

D first thing dat reached my hungry stomach last Sunday was bubbly. Yea!

Wuz time for a lazy three-hour champagne lunch. Hit it with my alco fren Cher Ru.

As Italian as Vespa

D spot was Giovino Greek-Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar (2141-1131)  in Changkat BB, KL. Its very non-halal. (Open for lunch on Sat & Sun.)

They gotta a champagne lunch dat happens Sundays from noon till 3. The booze served is an Italian sparkling (prosecco). I like.

The particular variety is La Tordera, while there’re white wines n red wines flowing too.

D owner also runs Sassorosso (dat does a champagne brunch), which i raided recently.

Thirsty?

Warm-uppers

Started d campaign with some appetizers. There are quite a few choices, my fave bein d goddam octopuses. Goes well with d booze.

D cold drinks are a great respite from d heat blazing outside. There’s also an upstairs, which could seen be fully-converted into a lounge. Looks like a great spot. This is where a walk-in cellar aka d wine shop lies.

Mmmmeeeeeeat. Owner / chef Giovani is a body-builder

U get to choose your main course – i would recommend meat, unless ur a dumbass who likes salads. There’s shit like pork ribs, pork steak, juicy sausages, rack of lamb, rib-eye, etc.

Choices, choices. Confusing

I went for d recommended rack of lamb. Fuckin good.

Perfecto

Also on d table was some pig.

Porky steaky

Sengeting

D prosecco served here – good to know there’s a take-away deal on it at d mo – $498 net for six bottles.

I miss u baby

Of course drinkin didnt end at 3pm. We continued elsewhere.

Chicanos' day out

D lunch happens every Sunday, and costs $141 net. Freeflow wine or bubbly. Or both. Its cheaper if u dont drink, but if u dont drink why u readin dis shit.

Champagne in the a.m.

Can’t be beat. Its been awhile.

Was sure glad to hear Sassorosso (2166-6428), the Italian restaurant and wine retailer, has recently started gettin people high every Sunday from 11am.

a

With Giovanni, the owner (of the joint & the bike)

I was there on time with a friend, Lena. Guests can have unlimited wine (white & red) and Italian sparkling wine, prosecco. The wine changes every week tho.

Prosecco is my new favourite bubbly. Created from predominately prosecco grapes in the northern Veneto region of Italy in the foothills of the Alps, its light, easy to drink and fun. According to a recent article in The Telegraph, in the UK these “cheap & cheerful” sort of drinks (prosecco, cava) are edging out the more well-known champagnes.

Bubblebubble

Had several glasses and got buzzing before i even looked at the menu.

Food. Hmmm. That ‘thing’ that has to enter your body in between drinking.

Found out that Lena is also a day-drunk. Haha

The deal here is appetizers are laid out out front, but the main course is your choice from the extensive menu – u got pastas, risotto, gnochi, lasagna, 17 types of pizzas (baked when u order in a wood-fired oven outdoors), grilled shit (rack, t-bone, etc), fish (including jumbo prawns which i devoured, as well as salmon), with a choice of side order and sauce, and dessert served at your table. Phew.

Godammit makin me hungry.

Yum

Feasting for a king. Will definitely hit it again.

It was the kind of sunny, breezy Sunday that just screams “Drink, bitch!” That i did, and basically stuck to d bubbly all d way.

Probably the biggest selection of grappa outside Italy. Haha

Probably the biggest selection of grappa outside Italy. Haha

The joint has a real chilled, cool and inviting atmosphere, with loads of natural light, a nice layout and a stylish, unpretentious feel. It used to be a person’s private home ages ago. Dude back in da day must have been a hustla to have a bungalow smack downtown.

Chef Giovanni’s been in KL for ages, i met him way back. He’s also opened a new wine bar (+pork) at Changkat BB called Giovino last week, which i plan to raid.

I’ve normally had champagne brunches at hotels like Westin & Ritz, so doing it at a restaurant is a nice change, and more personal.

Call the restaurant for reservation at the number above. Sassorosso Italian Restaurant & Wine Retailer’s Sunday brunch costs $147.20 ($128++) with booze. If u got liver failure, it costs $112.70 ($98++).
