Goodbye Nuffnang

Those with keen eyes would have noticed that since Friday there are no more nuffnang ads on my site, for now at least. In fact, there are no syndicated ads at all. COCKTALES is currently ad-free.

Given a choice, i’d rather not have a third party get ads for me coz:

  1. U dont make much from the ads, so why clutter your site with them
  2. Ads are usually unrelated to the content
  3. I’d rather talk to the client direct to know exactly what they’re lookin to achieve

So if u’d like to advertise your outlet, brand or event on this site, u can talk to me direct: deep@spin.my / 019 382-4760. Am sure we can come to a very mutually-benefiting agreement, without the middleman. But not if ur in some irrelevant business like cement mixers.

One particular big client came to my agency (i run SPiN, a marketing & PR agency) after approaching one of the blog network companies to do an online campaign. Get some bloggers to write about them, tweet for them, and build and maintain their FB page. I quoted them about 50k for the 6-month timeline.

The blog company’s quote? $300,000.

Out of which, the bloggers get a small sum, while they keep the rest. The bloggers lose out, and more significantly the clients lose quite a bit.

Every blogger has e-mail. It doesnt take a brain surgeon to figure out how to contact them and discuss an arrangement. And by talking to friends and associates, its pretty easy these days to decide which blog you should use. And they are methods available to determine the impact of your ads or advertorials.

I think there are too many layers between clients and writers/bloggers. Client goes to their media agency. Media agency goes to nuffnang/advertlets/whoever. These people finally approach d writers.

By then, the cost has gone up like 5 times coz everyone wants their cut. Clients dont always get their money’s worth.

Well, maybe they got too much money to throw around. But I think small to medium companies should deal direct with the particular blogger. It’s easier than it seems.

Anyway for now, am on my own!

If things don work out, dont really matter. I wont starve. And companies like nuffnang and advertlets will always be around if I decide to rejoin.

Anyway what do u think bout these issues?

Thirsty Sunday

Sunday is d best day for afternoon drinks.

Well, actually anyday is good for afternoon drinks.

And here’s The Kinks, the legendary garage-rock boys with Sunny Afternoon. Haha. A classic from way back in 1966.

Anyway, dis Sunday afternoon Kenny of beer blog BeerBeer is organizing a chillout event called Thirsty Sunday (trying to steal the ‘Thirsty’ name ah cibai? I’ll sue your ass Kenny).

It’s happening at Bakita in the city. Behind Werner’s on Changkat Bkt Bintang. It’s a relatively new joint dat i’m supposed to review soon.

Bakita has indoor & shaded outdoor seating options, good for day-drinking

Starts at noon, the best time to start. Ends at 5pm. Priced at $35 each. U’ll get buffet  food n snacks.

Booze u gotta buy (happy hour prices). However, there’ll be many beer vendors who will allow guests to taste their beers, at no charge. There shd be abt 30 different beers to test! And buy. Basically the most number of different beers u’ll ever find in d country.

Kinda mini beer fest. Tasting various untried beers shd be a kick.

Am glad Kenny decided to do it in d afternoon rather than night. Good call.

Warm afternoon, cold beers. Lets get high yall.

Tiger Beer gets a makeover

Spotted what looks like a radical change in the look of Tiger.

The new & the old

The almost all-blue can is now  mix of blue and silver. The gold is gone. Officially the can is called Tiger Platinum.

Definitely less flashy now, but i feel it looks a lil more stylish. Blue and silver has always been a good mix for me. The ZXR 750 i used to ride had that skin.

The medals in the front are clearer n larger, and dont look like gold coins anymore. The brand’s ‘badge’ effect on the front of the previous can has been watered down.

Thankfully the tiger chillin beneath the coconut tree remains the same.

Tiger is doing real well, as evidenced in this report.

For serious Hoegaarden guzzlers

S’More’s @ The Sphere is startin to get pretty serious with their drink promos. Really hard for drinkers to ignore it much longer.

D current weekly one is $40 net for yor first pint of Hoegaarden, followed by 15 bucks (net) for all your rest. Works well if u drink a lot. It wd b about $18/pint if u have eight ($145). Some other joints would scam u for about $240 for eight pints, as i posted about before. Like i said, the cost for a pint of Hoegaarden is really only $12.

So u could save 100 bucks per person, each session. Happens only on Wednesdays tho, from 6pm-9pm.

Finally being priced a lil more reasonably

Call to RSVP (2240-0069). Checkout their FB page linked above for more promos. Tuesdays is Irish Marathon – for $100 net, drink as much Guinness or Kilkenny as u want. And its for five hours from 5pm to 10pm.

Its the only bar i know that serves BOTH Hoegaarden and Guinness draft. (Update Jan 2011 – Hoegaarden draft removed, due to obligations to GAB.)
