Goodbye imperfect pint

Guinness has new glassware! And it looks better.

The new pint glass design is slimmer and shape-ier. It’s grooved, with a curvy V-shape cut into both sides. The GUINNESS wordmark and a harp in gold (as in Ireland’s coat of arms) are on one side, while on the other side is a larger, embossed harp.

New n old

The glass also seems a lil thicker, which would help the drink not get warm so quick.

The harp, symbol of Ireland

The ‘half’ pint, which Guinness Anchor (GAB) used to label ‘perfect pint‘ looks great – sleek, with the height more evident. It’s also done away with the inaccurate label. A perfect UK pint is actually 568ml, and not 360ml which the Guinness glass holds.

In fact, most ‘pints’ here are unique (including Guinness) – 500ml, which is considerably below a UK pint, and closer to a US pint (473ml).

So the perfect pint label was probably breaking two laws – the Trade Descriptions Act 1972, and the Weights and Measures Act 1972. (I called GAB a few years back to complain about their marketing method, and didnt get a good answer, but i decided not to pursue the matter with the authorities.) I guess alcohol companies need to be more responsible, and have more respect for consumers.

The new glasses are being introduced in phases, and all bars should have them real soon.

French Scotch?

Michel Couvreur is a range of single-malt Scotch whiskies. But it’s done in Burgundy, France, by a Belgian. Seriously.

It’s what i’d call a craft-liquor. Everything (including labelling and bottling) is done by hand, thus the quantity is limited. In fact, every bottle is signed by Michel himself, who started this business in 1964 in France’s wine country.

Cool bottles

He sources the raw whisky from various distilleries in Scotland, then ages them in France in sherry casks, in a 5,000-year-old village called Bouze, which is supposedly the origin of the word booze. Haha. The guy has an underground cave-cellar that stretches for two kilometres!

Luckily for us, there’s some of his booze available here now.

We had a tasting session. I was impressed by these whiskies. Obviously Michel takes a lot of care and pride, coming up with eight varieties. He personally goes to Portugal and Spain to select and book each sherry cask, showing his commitment, considering he’s already 85 years old.

Education

The Grain Whisky (ABV 44%) is the most basic one, with a floral nose and a dry, lightly-sweet taste. Aged more than 12 years is the Overaged Malt (ABV: 43%). I found this creamy and a little smoky.

Also quite old (over 12) is the Pale Single Single (45%), with a tangy, in-your-face aroma, altho in the mouth, it displays a very well-rounded flavour. A crowd favourite.

The Fleeting Single Cask (45%) is aged 15 years. Aromas of sherry, with a light-tasting woodiness. My fave was the Blossoming Auld Sherried Over 17 Years (45%). It has a nose of wood and leather, and a palette of smoke, wood and sherry. Awesome.

The dark-rum colour of this whisky is because of its 17 years in sherry casks.

The darkest whisky i've ever seen/had

Prices range between $250 and $600. Well worth a try, especially for single-malt junkies.

With eight varieties, i feel there’s a whisky for everyone, but all whiskies by Michel are very drinkable and interesting in their own way. Great stuff.

Bottle caps are sealed over with hot wax

A video i watched showed the waxing process goin down. The bottle’s tops were being dipped into a bucket of hot wax by a coupla old aunties in what looked like a kitchen in a barn.

Underground shit.

Impressed by these unheard-of whiskies

Michel hasn’t bothered with a website or shit like that, since there isn’t much produced anyway. It’s sold mostly to cigar clubs and private customers.

It’s brought in by Luen Heng. Go get ’em.

TDH opens in OKR

Tom, Dick and Harry’s, which first opened in TTDI, has just opened doors in The Scott Garden along Old Klang Road, KL.

I had a sneak preview last week, and the joint smelt like it was just readied a few hours ago. In fact, it was!

Thematically it’s the same as the original joint, and is more spacious and open, with quite a few tables on an outdoor deck.

Brand new

My camera is still fucking up. Most of the pictures i snapped aint even in there. Bastard.

Anyway, the drinks n food are same as the original outlet. Highlights include Pigs in Blanket, the pies, pork knuckle, etc.

Good news is there’s Erdinger Dunkel on tap.

Location map:

The ambiance is open and relaxed, and more casual, as instead of the low dining tables, more high tables are used; which i feel makes an outlet more sociable.

Over the next few days, TDH is havin events in conjunction with its opening. Wednesday – all international beers are two for $30. (All menu prices at TDH are nett. That’s what i like to see.)

It's on

Check it out.

Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc

The Blanc (or White) was launched last week at View Bar, Rooftop G Hotel, KL. Quite a party!

Nice fridge

At the mo, we have the 1664 lager in Malaysia, launched last year. Now there’s this ale too, the Blanc (330ml, abv 5%), which is a wheatbeer.

Party on

It comes in an attractive blue bottle. The beer pours a murky yellow, and i got aromas of frangipani. A lil like the Starker aromatic.

The View also launched it’s i-Bar, an interactive, touch-screen bar top. Pretty neat

Taste is very light, not as fruity as it smells, with a short finish, with no bitterness at all. I think i had 10.

This French beer is distributed by Carlsberg Malaysia.

A self-portrait, touch-screen Facebook-page camera

For now the ale is available at The Library (Puchong, Mid Valley, The Curve, Avenue K), La Bodega Pavilion, Ecoba, Bakita, and The Hill. It will be introduced nationwide from next month on.

On tap too (apologies, camera phone for now!)

Bartenders joining d fun

I reckon it will also appeal to those who dislike lager, or want something light, probably easy to pair with any meal without overpowering it in any way.
