Introducing Glenglassaugh

Glen…what??

Yea, it’s not a familiar whisky to most dramheads in the world, that’s coz the distillery’s been out of commission for awhile. However, Glenglassaugh’s here in Malaysia, where it was launched at Blue Elephant recently, after being brought in by Single Malt Sdn Bhd.

The distillery back in action

The source

Glenglassaugh is actually one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries dating back to 1875, and is situated on the Banffshire coast, founded by a local merchant named James Moir.

The highlanders

The highlanders

After being completely re-built in 1960, the distillery continued to produce whisky until 1986 when it was mothballed. Although it’s located near the sea, it’s a highland-style whisky.

It’s whiskies are bought by distilleries like Scotland’s favourite whisky The Famous Grouse, and Cutty Sark to be used in their delicious blends.

The stills are bored no more

The stills are still no more

The distillery sat silent until a group of investors bought Glenglassaugh distillery and started production again in 2008. So now we have a whole bunch of expressions of the Glenglassaugh range – Revival, Evolution, Torfa and the rare 30 Year Old and 40 Year Old.

The Revival is a x year old dram

The Revival is a reintroduction whisky

So 2012 saw the introduction of ‘Revival’ and ‘Evolution’ – the first single malt Scotch whiskies to be produced at the distillery in over two decades. Both whiskies are NAS (no age statement) ones, meaning it doesn’t say 12 years or 14 years or anything.

However, like all Scotch whiskies, it needs to be aged at least 3 years to be called a Scotch.

The stash

The stash

I find the Revival to be smooth, well-rounded, with sweet sherry notes. It does time in sherry casks as well for six months. The Evolution, which weighs in at 50% ABV, is kinda peppery and robust.

The Torfa is actually a peated highland whisky! It was only introduced last year. Nowhere as smokey as the Islay gang, but you definitely feel it.

Cool bottle

Cool bottle

While many distilleries have become highly automated; at Glenglassaugh, the spirit is still handcrafted by a small, skilled team dedicated to creating the highest quality product.

You can try them out and score yourself one at Single and Available stores:
– Revival, ABV 46% (no age statement) at RM270
– Evolution, ABV 50% (no age statement) at RM309
– Torfa, ABV 50% (no age statement) at RM299
– 30YO, ABV 44.8% at RM2280
– 40YO, ABV 42.5% at RM8500

As you can see, none of them are 40%. However, they are still very smooth, well-created whiskies. Adventurous drinkers should get a bottle or two.

Diageo Reserve World Class Finals

There was a cool competition among Malaysia’s best bartenders at The Bee recently, the Haig Club Pop-Up Bar Challenge, where top barmen faced-off to select the four who went to the South East Asian Finals in Bangkok last week.

And Shawn Chong from Omakase+Appreciate won a couple of titles: Best Bartender South East Asia, as well as winning the Speed Round Challenge – where he made 9 cocktails in 8 minutes!

Shawn was the Boozepimp of the Month on this blog way back in 2011.

As far as the Malaysian leg is concerned, this is the third time Shawn has won. He will now represent at the Global Finals which will be held in  South Africa, versus 49 of the world’s top bartenders.

The Malaysian leg saw 12 of the country’s mix kings battle out to create cocktails that were judged to be the best, with each creating one iconic cocktail featuring Haig Club whisky.

It’s kinda tough creating good cocktails from Scotch due to its flavours. I guess the Haig Club would be a better choice as it’s quite neutral in flavours.

I didnt get to try all the cocktails the boys made, but my fave was a really unique mix – called Grassie Goat – Haig Club, goat’s milk, peppermint liqueur, bannoffee curd, & mint leaf. A unique combination of exotic flavours, perfectly-balanced. Nothing close to anything I’ve ever tried. It was made by Naresh, of Prego in The Westin KL.

Shawn made Siamese Link, – a spicy-savoury cocktail made with Haig Club, Siamese paprika syrup and lime juice garnished with pandan jelly.

The other winners were M. Hanafi of Prego, The Westin; Osmund Illah of Hubba Hubba (KL); and Insan Sharily of Tate, The Intermark (KL).

There were also a couple of bartendresses who were making guests cocktails.

The Glenfiddich ‘distillery’ in Carcosa

William Grant & Sons took over the awesome hill of Carcosa for a few days for Glenfiddich to set-up a little mock-up of distillery.

The party went on for several nights, catering to about 3,000 whisky fans.

I love Carcosa. It’s such a cool spot, with the beautiful main building which has a great classic interior as well. Tastefully renovated too.

Anyway, the set-up was classy, and Glenfiddich 12, 15 and 18 were served. Guests were treated to group tours to the ‘distillery’ which was built outside.

After a history lesson on the brand, we were schooled on how whisky is made, with a cool presentation by my buddy Ian Brosnan, who did a great job.

The replica of a still was quite a sight. The last time i saw stills was in Scotland a few years back. I guess the only thing missing was the lovely aromas of alcohol brewing!

The party however was in the main building. Service was excellent.

The 12 is matured in American bourbon and Spanish sherry oak casks. Glenfiddich translates to valley of the deer in Gaelic.  It’s still managed by the fifth generation of William Grant’s descendants.

The good stuff

The 12, with its famous triangular bottle, is definitely one of the single malts that i enjoy. I find it easily enjoyable, pleasant, and smooth. Fresh with a mellow finish. Hence, it’s the world’s best-selling single malt. It’s expressions go up to 50 year-olds.

They are also the first ones to package whisky in cyndrical tins.

Let’s hope they have events at more cool spots like this.

The Star Factor Showdown

Heineken and GAB Professional Solution (GABPS) held this competition recently that picked the cream of Malaysian bartenders to select one that will compete in the Heineken Global Bartender Finals 2015 in Holland.

In 2013 our guy got all the way to the finals but lost to a local. Damn.

The Heineken Star Pour is a five-step process of pouring the perfect Heineken draft.

The contenders

The contenders

It wasn’t merely pouring tho; some bartenders indulged in some booty-shakin before getting down to business. Hilarious! They selected their own tunes to work with.

The three winners from the six were judged to be Glen from Mish Mash (Penang), Sean from Muzuem (Setiawalk), and Spencer from Publique (Penang). They will now have  a 3-day boot camp to prep them for the Holland finals.
