here ( Sabah) some brewer mix it with some kind of tree bark donno what older called it. after mixing, the bahar turned to a bit reddish in color and the taste is super super super super bitter and i’m not super tester ( i drink 10 ++ cups kopi kosong everyday coffee > spirit ). BTW in our tradition KadazanDusun, bahar can stabilize hypertension, langkau or montoku for alcoholic LOL and tuak/tapai/kinomol/rice wine for party drink and beer or 3:10 for gout in the making LOL.
